Assignment 6

1. The quote I chose for this assignment was from A Lecture on the Anti-Slavery Movement by Frederick Douglas. The quote states, "One anti-slavery movement nearly died out 50 years ago, and I am not prepared to deny the possibility of a like fate for this one. The elements of discord and deterioration are already in it, and working their legitimate results. And yet I am not gloomy. Present organizations may perish, but the cause will go on. That cause has a life, distinct and independent of the organizations patched up from time to time to carry it forward. Looked at apart from the bones and sinews, and body, it is a thing immortal. It is the very essence of justice, liberty, and love. The moral life of human society -- it cannot die, while conscience, honor, and humanity remain. If but one be filled with it, the cause lives... If there be but one such man in the land, no matter what becomes of abolition societies and parties, there will be an anti-slavery cause, and anti-slavery movement...." (pp. 3).

2. I believe the meaning of this quote is even though there is a history of anti-slavery movements being destroyed or have never prospered, Douglas has still not given up. He does not want to encounter another failure but is prepared for the worse. He is also saying, even if the organization dies out or gets destroyed, it does not matter because at least their voices were heard. They have made a mark in history, and no person or persons can take that away from them. I believe it is also saying that after everything is done if there are any survivors left then they have shown a better chance of success because that one can continue to relay the message to others even though his/her people are dead.

3. I like this quote because it expressed the ambition and drive these abolitionists wanted for a better future for black enslaved people. They acknowledged reality and realized their success rate was slim to none, but that still did not make them quit. They kept pushing and realized if death were to arrive upon them then they will also be satisfied with their duties. I really like this quote because so many brown and black skinned people are again being brutally hurt and murdered in the street for being black. This 21st-century "trend" started off with Trayvon Martin and slowed grew into a mass genocide. Now brown and black skin people are more worried than ever to step out there front door, and even to travel to foreign countries because anti-blackness does not only exist in America.
