Assignment 7

1. The quote I chose for this assignment was from What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? by Frederick Douglass. The quote states, "They loved their country better than their own private interests; and, though this is not the highest form of human excellence, all will concede that it is a rare virtue and that when it is exhibited, it ought to command respect. He who will, intelligently, lay down his life for his country, is a man whom it is not in human nature to despise. Your fathers staked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, on the cause of their country. In their admiration of liberty, they lost sight of all other interests".

2. I believe the meaning of this quote is despite everything going on in America at that time (i.e. slavery, mistreatment of black people, etc), the American people did not want to be held down by England no more. They wanted to be free, and build their own nation, not another British nation. During this moment, men who were freed, never enslaved or enslaved people wanted liberty and freedom. They were willing to put everything aside and fight for something that will lead to a better nation for the American people. It shows that when a country or nation is in desperate need or has extreme concerns, they will drop everything and fight for what is "best" for the country. They will come as one people, not separate cultures, and fight for a better path.

3. I like this quote because it shows that America is not always this heartless or ruthless country. We actually do care for one another, only when we are in desperate times, but it shows that we have compassion and are willing to make the American people better. I also like it because since we are in desperate times now with how the government is being operated and how Mr. Trump wants to operate the country, it shows that maybe we do have hope for a better future. Especially since Mr. Trump has said and done some horrible things about the American people and foreigners.
