Assignment 9

1. The quote I chose for this assignment was from American Rhetoric; John F. Kennedy's American University Commencement Address. The quote states, "I speak of peace because of the new face of war. Total war makes no sense in an age where great powers can maintain large and relatively invulnerable nuclear forces and refuse to surrender without resort to those forces. It makes no sense in an age where a single nuclear weapon contains almost ten times the explosive force delivered by all the allied air forces in the Second World War. It makes no sense in an age when the deadly poisons produced by a nuclear exchange would be carried by wind and water and soil and seed to the far corners of the globe and to generations yet unborn".

2. I believe the meaning of this quote is to have peace we must eliminate all things that can produce or cause harm and violence to each other. Either those things be people, weapons, words, etc. we must get rid of those things to protect ourselves and future generations. We can not have peace if we are always looking to do things or create things just in case someone wants to rebel against someone or some people. How can we have peace if consciously we are saying that we will try to stop harming each other, but subconsciously making sure that if anyone gets out of line, we have back door weapons or words to defend ourselves? How can we have peace if we are constantly thinking about who or what thing might attack us next? How can we have peace if the only time a nation truly comes together is when war is at our front door? We should be able to come together and get rid of personal interest when peace and tranquility are in front of us.

3. I like this quote because we always talk about peace, but yet we never try to take serious action or put effectively laws in government to create peace. We always talk about peace, but yet it is only a topic people use to make themselves more likable to the public.  We always talk about peace, but yet subconsciously majority of humans prefer violence because they enjoy the adrenaline rush they get from it.
